BY ZIO BARITAUX | CULTURE MAY 25, 2018

“Glamping” lets you experience Mother Nature without sacrificing creature comforts. Here are some swanky outdoor accommodations—from the Hudson Valley to remote Namibia—plus designer tips and must-haves that will ensure you’re a happy glamper this summer.

Someone Who Inspired Us

The recent wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was stirring, and we’re equally inspired by their rumored honeymoon destination: the Hoanib Valley Camp in remote Namibia, which is surrounded by sand dunes, desert plains and wild giraffes and elephants. The luxurious glamp-site takes sustainability seriously, featuring Himba-carved furniture, all solar power, and decks made from recycled materials.

For glamping closer to home, Collective Hudson Valley is an ideal getaway from New York City. Nestled on an organic farm, each luxury tent features king-size beds with high-thread-count sheets and a Pendleton blanket; an over-the-bed chandelier and wood-burning stove; and a private bathroom with a rain-style hot shower and Turkish towels and robes. This summer, Collective will also offer a retreat on Governors Island—book now, before it’s sold out.

If you want to choose and build your own glamp-site, interior designer Kimberly Winthrop has a few tips, from how to define your space to arranging it for entertaining. “A comfortable seating area with lots of pillows encourages conversation,” Winthrop tells Architectural Digest. She also recommends adding luxe touches, such as a “chandelier in a tent, soft rugs underfoot, hand-crafted cocktails and string lights.”

Sharktooth’s curated selection of rugs would look great in a tent (and, afterward, at home). Our top pick is this 4 1/2-by-8-foot antique Anatolian kilim tapestry with a soft palette of natural dyes. Or, if you plan to lounge on the floor, try this vintage Beni Ourain rug from Morocco instead.

19 Northwest Landing Road is the first commissioned work by Charles Gwathmey after his seminal Gwathmey Residence on Bluff Road. This rental home is a two bedroom modernist living sculpture and has been widely published. The home also features a new Airstream that helps to complete the geometric composition of the property and offers a fun glamping experience for those renting the home!
