Everyone knows that the bedroom is where the magic happens—the design magic, that is.

At Apartment Therapy, we firmly believe your home is your sanctuary and no room better exemplifies that better than the boudoir. It’s the one place in your home where you can really relax, so you might as well fill the room with luxurious sheets, beautiful throw pillows, and a scrumptious candle. After all, the average person spends about a third of their life in bed, so go big or go home.

That being said, there are some bedroom trends that are seriously past their prime.

So which trends should you kick to the curb? Seven interior experts weigh in.

“Gray and blue have been dominant in design, from wall color to textiles and everything in between. I’m hoping to see warmer whites and greens, rich leather—and maybe pops of persimmon!” Jess Cooney, interior designer

2. … and Beige

“No more beige bedrooms. A bedroom can still be a calming sanctuary and have personality.” —Danielle Walis, interior designer and furniture designer for The Inside

3. Steer Clear of the Straight and Narrow

“Straight, wooden beds. Okay, maybe they are not totally going into oblivion but in 2019, I think people will lean towards more lush and plush. Think upholstery, or headboards with curves. No more plain Jane and simple: Let’s up the ante and bring on the drama!” Maureen Stevens, interior designer

“If it hasn’t already been ousted, I think the farmhouse headboard will finally meet its demise. We seem to be growing more towards cocoon-like settings and our beds are no different. Upholstered headboards and footboards will be seeing new life with richer, more textured fabrics like velvets and wools.” Courtney Thomas, interior designer

4. No More High Maintenance

“Real plants are being swapped out for faux ones. We saw this trend in the Modsy Trend Report and think that bedrooms overflowing with greenery will quickly be subbing in low-maintenance faux plants.” —Alessandra Wood, interior design expert and director of style at Modsy.

5. Matchy-Matchy Beds Are on the Outs

“Consider shaking up your bedding routine and take a collected approach with pillow cases, duvets, and sheets. Instead of having them match like a suite of furniture, introduce variety, texture and a touch of the unexpected.” Jean Liu, interior designer

6. Move Over, Mantras

“Rid your bedroom of quippy posters or signs that hang over your bed. We all need reminders to ‘Live our best lives’ or to ‘Stay humble and kind’ but the bedroom is not our preferred place for these mantras.” —Jean Liu
