The Spin: Six North Fork farms you need to visit

So those that know me know that I am the food police which, theoretically, should be a full-time job. I, however, have eating healthy, locally and organically down to a science. One of our greatest and most fun assets here on the North Fork is our edible bucolic bounty.

Here are my six fave farms, ordered from west to east, on the top fork. These are must try’s if you haven’t yet.

All of these farms are either organic or biodynamic, which is a spiritual and ecological approach to farming. Also, be sure to inquire within about their community supported agriculture options should you want to become part of their produce clubs.

Ty Llwyd

I’ve been a patron here since I started weekending out here in 2000. And now, not only am I able to purchase my staple produce, free-range eggs and the likes, I am also able to get my fresh grass-fed raw milk there! I used to have to ship that from Pennsylvania, so trust me, to be able to get it in the old-fashioned glass milk bottles I grew up with is pure awesomesauce.

And I mean, how cute is Susie (pictured above)!

Ty Llwyd is located 5793 Sound Ave. in Northville

Garden of Eve Organic Farm & Market

They grow tons of produce ranging from lettuce varietals to edamame to squash blossoms to corn, everything, you name it

They also offer cooking classes.

Truly fun stuff!

Garden of Eve is located at 4558 Sound Ave. in Riverhead

Sang Lee Farms

With a host of meats added to their organic produce, this is a staple. I don’t go a week without purchasing at least one or more stir fry packs and their infamous edible petal mesclun greens.

They also host various dinners, cooking classes and youth farming courses.

I almost forgot to mention, my new absolutely wicked addiction to Joe and Liza’s ice cream sandwiches which they now carry. If there aren’t any left, its because I bought them out again, SORRY!

Sang Lee Farms is located at Route 48 in 25180 Peconic

8 Hands Farm

Their website is under construction, but you can visit their facebook page. They raise Icelandic sheep for milk, meat and fiber and are a growing operation.

I am really excited about this new venture, it’s such a welcome addition. And to think, it all started over a conversation a handful of years ago!

8 Hands Farm is located at Cox Neck Lane in 4735 Cutchogue

Breeze Hill Farm & Preserve

This breathtaking farm is on the Long Island Sound and hosts many events.

Their cider is off the charts and they are in the process of producing hard cider, so stay tuned!

While this farm is nearing organic, they aren’t there quite yet.

A new and very welcome addition is their fresh hot doughnut machine and warm cider. Bar none, these are the best cinnamon donuts I have ever had and I grew up on cinnamon donuts and cider at a local farm near my childhood home … sigh.

The first apples of the season were picked just today. They were ginger golds and the early macintoshes. Last, but not least, is the honey. Make sure you ask about it, as soon as they jar it, it sells out.

Breeze Hills Farms is located at 31215 Route 48 in Peconic

KK’s Biodynamic

Oh, where to start. Owner KK Haspel is one of the most passionate farmers I have come to know. Even her flowers are biodynamic. You simply cannot come to the North Fork and not go to KK’s. Her produce ranges the gamut from fresh herbs to more than 16 varieties of heirloom tomatoes. She also offers outstanding free-range eggs.

She has events as well.

KK’s Biodynamic is located 58845 Main Road in Southold

There you have it. Stay tuned for the next edition of “The Spin!”
